Tuesday, this week, BlackBerry launches its final smartphone before wrapping up the hardware division. The BlackBerry DTEK60 is running on Android phone and not the BlackBerry OS.
The Canadian-based smartphone pioneer has conceded defeat by Android and iOS devices. Last month, BlackBerry (BB) announced it is winding up its hardware division, to concentrate on software and security features offering.
Meaning the BlackBerry DTEK60 is the last BB phone you can buy made by the company and not outsourced to another OEM. It is also a big deal for BB, as it carries a lot of risks for the company.
“This one is our phone. This is fully our responsibility,” said BB COO Marty Beard.
There are however doubts as to how much interest the BlackBerry DTEK60 will have on the market. BB did not establish a deal partnership with any telecom companies. Instead, the company is pitching its device directly to governments and companies.
“It’s not necessarily an anti-carrier strategy. It’s more that we see this as the most efficient and most cost-effective way to get to that customer base,” Beard said.
