Facebook Messenger to end support for Smartphones running Windows 8.1 and earlier

Facebook has started sending out notification emails to users rocking smartphones running the Windows 8.1 and earlier. In part, the email reads:

Thank you for choosing to use Messenger. We regret to inform you that since the end of March, the app version you’re using is no longer supported and you cannot sent and receive messages. To continue to send and receive messages from Facebook on your phone, update your Facebook app tot the latest version.”

The act of ending support for Messenger on devices running Windows 8.1 and earlier version should not affect many people. That is if the current stats, of Windows Phone users’ market share being well below 1% of the market as at the end of 2016, are anything to go by. Both WhatsApp and Skype have already cut support for the said device.

Ironically, as Windows Phone users are getting cut off by Facebook Messenger, their counterparts on the iOS and Android platform are getting spoiled with a raft of new features. Features that include new messaging options, mass animations, and sticker packs.
