Health experts in Nigeria have reasons to smile as the country records its first and successful baby from Oocytes Cryopreservation (eggs freezing). The baby was delivered at the Bridge Clinic, the foremost and leading fertility clinic in Nigeria.
Baby Tiwatope (surname withheld) becomes the first baby to be birthed from the first of this novel procedure to be done in Nigeria. The child’s birth in unlike any other in Nigeria; in the sense that it has elevated Nigeria on to the international maps of countries where Oocyte Cryopreservation can be carried out successfully.
Oocyte Cryopreservation is an innovation within the In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) space, and Nigeria is among the few countries in the world that can boast of it.
While narrating the process to LEADERSHIP, Physician at the Bridge Clinic, Dr. Emmanuel Owie said:
“Tiwatope’s mother had her eggs frozen using the flash-freezing process. This is the cutting edge technology in cryobiology, where the eggs or oocytes of a woman is dehydrated, and the water content is replaced with “anti-freeze” solution (cryoprotectants) before freezing. This will prevent the formation of ice crystals which could destroy the cell.
