Starting January 2019, all small businesses in Kenya, going to renew their business permit or trade license, or apply for the first time, will be required to pay a new Presumptive Tax. This tax was non-existent in the previous years and was just recently introduced with the enactment of the Finance Act 2018. The bill for which was passed under very weird voting in parliament; those who voted against it were clearly many than those who voted for it, so it is not clear how it sailed through.

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) wants millions of small businesses in the country to start paying the Presumptive Tax from January 1st, 2019. The tax will be a prerequisite to getting their business permit or trade license renewed or issued for the first time. The said tax will be 15% of the cost of the business permit or trade license.

In accordance with Finance Act, 2018, the Presumptive Tax shall become payable from January 1, 2019. All eligible taxpayers are advised to pay for the presumptive tax at the time of payment for business permit fee or trade license,” …read more

The three big smartphone makers from China – Huawei, Xiaomi, and Oppo are having a good field day in the international markets selling more devices than their rivals would care to admit. That is according to the latest report by the research firm Gartner, who just released the Q3 2018 smartphone sales report.

As per the report, the three companies are credited for pushing the global smartphone sales to over 389 million units. Though Samsung still takes the lion’s share of the global smartphone sales having sold 73.3 million units within the quarter, it has ceded some grounds to the Chinese smartphone maker. Samsung has lost 3.4% of its market share year-on-year.

On the other hand, Huawei has seen a substantial growth in its market, from 9.5% of the global market share in the Q3 of 2017 to 13.4% in Q3 of 2018. Huawei sold over 15 million more units in the Q3 of 2018 compared to the same period the previous year.

The gap between Samsung and Huawei continues to shrink, as Huawei expands aggressively by investing in branding and distribution in the emerging markets of the …read more

Microsoft has tried it’s very best to try and sell us the idea of dumping Google Chrome browser for its new Edge browser that came with Windows 10. However, despite the company’s best effort, Chrome, powered by Chromium engine, remains the people’s choice browser.

And Chrome remains people’s choice browser across all platforms; Windows, macOS, Android, Windows Mobile, and iOS. No matter what Microsoft does, Chrome is still picked first almost always by the majority of people.

HTML engine simply can’t compete with Chromium

Though Edge browser has put up a good fight. It modernized the default Windows browser, and users can attest that it is a great improvement from the Internet Explorer. It has a modern look and feel.

However, it is still running under the EdgeHTML engine, which cannot quite keep up with the Chromium engine running Chrome browser. Despite its greatest effort, HTML engine remains a tough sell for Microsoft, and they have now thrown in the towel and adopted the Chromium engine.

Microsoft is now working on a new browser that will be based on the Chromium engine that will replace Edge. The project is codenamed …read more

For a streaming app, MultiChoice DStv Now sure seems to be lagging behind in as far as availing itself readily to viewers. Until now, viewers who also play games on the Microsoft Xbox gaming console had no way of viewing content off DStv without switching from the gaming machine.

And as a gamer, I will tell you this for free, once you got yourself sitting on the couch, turn the TV and Xbox on, it very hard to switch to anything else. Even when you’re tired of wasting the ‘bad guys’ in the games, you still keep it Xbox. You don’t turn to TV channels not available outside the Xbox ecosystem, and that’s is where DStv Now has been shooting itself in the foot.

If you are not available everywhere where the eyeballs are staring at, the viewers will view what is readily available. Hence, Nextflix…

An increasing number of DStv customers are opting to use DStv Now as their primary method of getting DStv on additional TVs in the house,” reads in part, a press release by MultiChoice.

Silicon Valley Nigeria Economic Development Initiative (SV-NED) is an organization set up in 2016 as a vehicle for driving economic prosperity for the stakeholders in Nigeria’s tech space and the Silicon Valley. SV-NED achieves so by synchronizing, driving partnerships, and synergy between the two sides.

The organization recently held a three-day economic summit that focused on the job market strategy for Nigerians. The summit aimed at helping leaders understand the job market, how it works, and the opportunities available for Africans within the Silicon Valley market.

During the SV-NED led summit, the organization’s leaders paid a courtesy visit to several tech companies within the Silicon Valley including Tesla Motors, Nextplay, and the San Jose Mayor’s office.

Lesley Toche Founder/CEO Nextplay Events

(PS – Nextplay is a growing events community hosting at least 4,000 Black and Latino professionals working in tech)

Up to date, SV-NED while operating from the Silicon Valley, has completed two Immersion Training & Certification Programs, which has so far graduated 120 trainees all from Nigeria. It was the same organization that officially invited and welcomed Nigeria’s Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, the country’s Minister of Defense Mansur …read more

How to share your Wi-Fi internet connection on MacBook with other devices?

Have you ever been to a hotel or something like that where even though they provide free Wi-Fi internet connection they limit it to just one device per room or user? It can be frustrating especially if you want to get some work done online, while at the same time keep up with your family and friends via social media.

That is because most people use their phone to go on social media, and their laptop to get the work done. One may argue that you can just use one device to carry out both; but out of experience, I know ‘FaceTiming’ on a laptop is just not as convenient (comfortable) as using a mobile phone. The latter allows you to easily move about, lay on the bed, go in and out of rooms. Something you will not comfortably do while ‘FaceTiming’ on a laptop.

At the same time, you can’t really get some heavy work done on a smartphone. Sure, you might be able to type short email replies and send document/files among other light work. However, you cannot comfortably and efficiently type a three-page letter …read more

Michelle Obama’s social media activism cost Nigeria’s ex-President Jonathan his 2015 re-election?

Innov8tiv

In case you haven’t read about it or heard about it. Nigeria’s former President, Goodluck Jonathan released a new book titled My Transition Hours. It’s an interesting book if you want to look at both local and international politics from ex-President Jonathan’s eyes.

However, Jonathan makes our social media feature because of the allegation he has against former US President Barack Obama; more specifically his wife, Michelle Obama. Now, we all know the news coming out of Nigeria during Jonathan’s time was often about the Islamic terror group the Boko Haram.

This terror group was killing innocent civilians in their hundreds, abducting innocent women and child, and forcing them into early (forced) marriages. They detested anything related to the ‘West’ and that meant the girl-child empowerment mentality was a big no, as the girl’s place was to make and/or feed the babies.

So there is this group of 276 girls they kidnapped from Chibok, which sparked a social media campaign from Nigeria to all the way across the world. And the then FLOTUS, Mrs. Michelle Obama weighed in on the campaign. Apparently, that act by FLOTUS was taken …read more
