Stanford Muyila from Malawi was awarded the Young Scientist Award in Japan. Muyila was one of the many scientists participating in the Japan-China-Korea Grassland Conference.
For the competition, Muyila present research on “The Effect of Pre-treatment Method (Autoclaving and Pasteurization) on the Nutritional Value of Bagasse Incubated with White-Rot Fungi.”
In the research, Muyila demonstrates a low-cost method of improving the nutritional value of agricultural residues that can be used as animal feed. His research elaborates a successful way of pasteurizing and incubating bagasse without the use of sterilization equipment.
Additionally, Muyila found out that his methods produced the same results as those of technologies used for nutritional value improvement. In a nutshell, Muyila’s research gives top quality (nutritious) feeds at a fraction of the cost of using machines.
He presented his research to the judges at Sapporo, Japan and awarded the 2018 Young Scientist Award. Currently, Muyila is enrolled for a Masters degree at the Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine in Japan. As part of the award, Muyila got a scholarship to pursue further studies in Japan via the JICA program of the ABE Initiative.
