On Thursday this week, Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame announced a slimmed-down cabinet made up of 26 seats. Interestingly, Kagame appointed women to half of the cabinet seats, making Rwanda join the handful of countries across the world with gender parity in government cabinet positions.

This announcement came two days after an equally gender-balanced cabinet announcement by Ethiopia Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed alongside a newly appointed female president for Ethiopia. Perhaps Ethiopia and Rwanda remain as a beacon of hope for feminist on the continent, that the journey of ending gender-discrimination has begun.

You should note that Rwanda has for a long time now been internationally recognized for its female representation. The current parliament has 61% women.
