Smile Telecom Holdings Ltd. popularly referred to as Smile has rolled out East Africa’s first Voice over LTE (VoLTE) offering; a high-definition voice and video calling service. Smile wants to roll out VoLTE all over the East African region, as it strives to meet the growing demand for data among enterprises.
Smile, which has LTE network in the region, is looking to provide consumers with cutting-edge attractive new services. The telecom will first launch the VoLTE services in Kampala, Entebbe and Mukono in Uganda. It will later on proceed to other towns including Jinja, Kasese, Masaka, Mbarara, Kabale, Masindi, Gulu, Tororo, Soroti, Mbale, and Fort Portal.
The Telecom was able to launch VoLTE in Uganda using the infrastructure laid out by its long-term technology partner, Alcatel-Lucent. The service uses Smile’ IMS technology and Alcatel-Lucent Network integration, projected management and testing services.
